Cardiac arrest is often caused by an abnormal rhythm in the
heart, called ventricular fibrillation (V-Fib). In the event of
cardiac arrest, immediate defibrillation is ideal. If an AED
(Automated External Defibrillator) is not immediately available, CPR
(Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation); a combination of rescue breathing
and chest compressions can buy some time. CPR can restore
circulation of oxygenated blood throughout the body and to the
brain. Without oxygen, brain damage or death can occur in less
than 8 minutes.

If treatment is delayed 4-5 minutes, chances of survival are decreased by 40%. A 10 minute delay results in death 95% of the time.
